Gertrude Steinberg, M.A. Senior Family Counselor Gertrude Steinberg, M.A., is a gerontologist who has dedicated over twenty years of her career to working with family caregivers of Alzheimers disease patients. Gertrude Steinberg is a Senior Family Counselor at the NYU Silberstein Aging & Dementia Research Center, research coordinator of an NIA supported longitudinal study of aging and Alzheimers disease, collaborator on several caregiver research studies and co-leader of two caregiver support groups she and colleague, Emma Shulman, began at the ADRC. Gertrude Steinbergs interests have lead her to focus on all aspects of helping family caregivers live with Alzheimers disease: caring for the Alzheimers patient at home, getting the best care for patients and family caregivers, factors that lead to institutionalization of patients, emotional support for family caregivers throughout the duration of the illness; and bereavement counseling for family caregivers. She is the co-author of several handbooks, manuals and articles that reflect these interests. Gertrude Steinberg was among those individuals instrumental in starting the New York City chapter of the Alzheimers Association where she has served as chairperson of the membership committee, and Development and Training Specialist for leaders of caregiver support groups.
